BRANDON NORSTED
SCULPTURE and DESIGN

I’ve never been one for classification. The act of naming seems to pin objects and people into spaces where they don’t always belong. While I realize that words are necessary for communication between human beings, they don’t always help when it comes to understanding art. These few pieces reflect a growing desire on my part to evade a specific identity as an artist. This notion of being without a solid identity is pursued in the work by muting common forms to the point of abstraction so that the common name no longer applies. Such is the case with the “Bevege Felt Chair.” One can sit on it like it were a chair, but, in fact, the more solid chair that would seem to be underneath it has been removed and all that remains is a muted notion of where a chair once was. I have found that my goal to not be pinned down is impossible due to the fact that I have a particular history, I come from a particular place and I have a particular set of skills that all point to me whether I like it or not. The same can be said for my work; it says things and fits into categories without me trying.
